Gaz Coombes Album Preview

Posted by admin Comments off

Gaz Coombes is set to release new album ‘Here Come The Bombs’ on May 21st.

Stepping aside from much loved Britpop icons Supergrass, Gaz Coombes began work on his debut solo album last year. Working on his own for the first time, the songwriter attempted to piece together a full length document without the help of his childhood friends.

Signed, dealed and (soon to be) delivered, ‘Here Come The Bombs’ drops on May 21st. Gaz Coombes has unveiled a number of teaser tracks, with the artist recently piecing together a fully interactive trailer.

Get involved below.

- – -

?In a band, when you get a group of people who are walking the same path, it can be the most beautiful thing,? Coombes explained recently.

?But with this I felt it was really focused on just what I wanted to get across, and on my inspirations ? they were all my things that I?m into, whether it?s film, film soundtrack, or past artists that we didn?t really look at much in Supergrass. That was all really exciting. This is a completely blank page in a blank book, ready to be written on.?

‘Here Come The Bombs’ is set to be released on May 21st.

Mary Richardson Kennedy’s Funeral Brings Together Family and Friends

Posted by admin Comments off

Just three days after her shocking suicide, family and friends came together to celebrate the life of Mary Richardson Kennedy at St. Patrick?s Church in Bedford, New York this afternoon (May 19).

Many A-list stars showed up to the service to pay their respects including Caroline Kennedy, John McEnroe, Edward James Olmos, Glen Close and Chevy Chase.

Not in attendance were Mary?s siblings who supposedly skipped the service due to the presence of her estranged husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

He gave a speech recalling a final phone call from Mary the day before she died and said, ??She said, ?You know me better than anyone,? and I said, ?Yes,?? he told a hushed church. ?And she said, ?I was a good girl.? And I said, ?Yes, you were a good girl.??

A high school friend added, ?She was an angel. It was a fitting tribute.?

‘If we made marijuana legal, we’d save lives’

The veteran musician on God, politics, his favourite singer and why weed should be decriminalised

What were the songs that made you realise you wanted to be a musician?

When I first started out, I sang a lot in church. Amazing Grace was the first song that I can remember ever singing. Gospel was probably the main kind of music I was into. Then I got into Bob Wills (1) and Hank Williams and Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong, all those great singers. Ray Charles came along ? I loved him. Ray Price. The greatest singer there is, I think, is Ray Price (2).

Sinatra was a big hero of yours, of course.

Yes, he was. Still is. He is my favourite singer. And I read somewhere that I was his favourite singer, so that really made me happy.

There’s no better compliment than that ?

That was the big one.

What did you love about his singing so much?

I loved his voice, I loved his phrasing, I loved his acting, I loved his attitude. Everything about Sinatra was good. He had the ability to pick great songs and once Sinatra had sung them, that pretty much was it. He pretty much put his stamp on everything.

The early 50s seemed like a golden age, with people building popular music brick by brick, didn’t it?

For me it was. It’s where my music came from. I used to work in the cotton fields a lot when I was young. There were a lot of African Americans working out there. A lot of Mexicans ? the blacks and the whites and the Mexicans, all out there singing, and it was like an opera in the cotton fields and I can still hear it in the music that I write and play today.

When you started out as a songwriter, how far did your ambitions extend? Did you always want to become a singer as well?

Honestly, when I was growing up I had no idea that I would succeed to this extent. I would have been very happy ? I was a big Gene Autry and Roy Rogers fan, and I liked to ride my horse and throw my rope and shoot my gun and I loved all that kind of music ? to be another singing cowboy. The fact that I got to do songs like Stardust and sing with Ray Charles and do a lot of things with other singers ? Frank Sinatra and I did a couple of things together ? that was beyond anything I could have dreamed of.

Is it hard to stay interested in songs you wrote 60 years ago, but which you know your audience still wants to hear?

I really enjoy singing those songs, and I have yet to get tired of them. When I do get tired of one I replace it with another one, cos there’s a jillion songs out there I can do. The band has no idea what I’m going to do next, cos I have no idea. I just play it off the top of my head.

You don’t feel the urge to do a Bob Dylan and keep your best-loved songs fresh by making them unrecognisable?

That probably works for him, and I’m sure my take on them each night is a little bit different. But basically I do ‘em the traditional way. I enjoy being out here and I enjoy playing the music, and as long as the people show up I hope to be out here ? we haven’t slowed down any, we do 150 shows a year. I try to split it up so I can spend time around the house with the family, the horses and the things I love doing when I’m off. It seems to be working pretty good. I work a few days and I’m off a few days.

Was Nashville’s audience as conservative as the Nashville industry when you headed off to Texas to play “outlaw” country in the 70s?

When I left Nashville I went to Texas because that’s where I came from, and because I was playing in Texas a lot in different places. And I saw hippies and rednecks drinking beer together and smoking dope together and having a good time together and I knew it was possible to get all groups of people together ? long hair, short hair, no hair ? and music would bring them together. I called Waylon Jennings and I said: “Waylon, you need to get down to Austin because it’s really happening here. There are people here with hair dragging the ground that will love your music.” He laughed a little bit, then he came down and found out I was telling the truth.

Did the breakthrough you made with Red Headed Stranger in 1975 surprise you?

I didn’t really realise how large it was gonna get. I had nothing to compare it to. As it was happening, it was a slow thing, so I sort of went along with it. I was just feeling grateful that the night before I woulda had a bunch of hippies and rednecks in together having a good time. I didn’t know how big it could get. Today, as I look back on it, I mighta been a little bit shocked about how big it was gonna go.

You’ve never been afraid to take risks ? is that what separates an artist from a pop singer?

I don’t know. But I do know that if you’re with a record company and you’re with them for four to eight years and you’re under their control, and their producers produce you the way they think you should sound, that may be OK for some people, but for me it was not a good idea. In Nashville, the songs that I was singing and playing and the styles they were in were not the direction I needed to go. But in Texas there was a lot of people who liked the kind of music I was playing. They liked the country ? the real solid hardcore steel guitars and fiddles ? they still do. They like the real country music ? not that there’s anything wrong if you put strings and horns on, but for me it waters it down. Personally, I want to hear country music with a steel guitar and a fiddle; I want to hear Stardust with strings. That’s just me.

You have been politically active on the left for a long time, but as a young man you volunteered to be a jet pilot in the Korean war. Did you look at the world very differently then?

Well, I’m not necessarily a warmonger, but I’m not necessarily someone who would want to sit around while we were getting the shit beat out of us either. I’m a second-degree black belt in taekwondo and also kung fu, so I’m a martial artist and I’m not afraid of trouble. I just don’t like to look for it.

You fell out with the church in the 50s ? unlike artists such as Elvis and Jerry Lee who kept trying to balance the devil’s music with the love of God. What happened?

I was teaching Sunday school and playing clubs, but there were a lot of members of church who didn’t think that was a good idea. They felt if I was going to teach Sunday school I should quit my job at the club. I was playing music on Saturday night at the Nite Owl to a lot of the people I saw in church on the Sunday morning. I wasn’t the only one going to both places. (3)

Did starting to smoke weed (4) make a difference to the way you thought about the world and your political interests?

When I was out in the bars drinking and fighting I was a little bit less of a peacemaker than I would be if I’d had a coupla hits of a joint and gone and laid down somewhere. I’d have less bumps on my head, that’s for sure.

Won’t it be too hard for Congress to decriminalise weed?

Well, Connecticut just became the 17th state to legalise or decriminalise marijuana (5). It’s coming. It has to, because economically we need the money ? why give it to criminals? Most people realise it’s not a deadly drug like cocaine or cigarettes. Cigarettes killed my mother, my dad, half my family, so don’t tell me about health when you’re talking about legalising marijuana because it’s not dangerous healthwise. I’m the canary in the mine, and I’m still healthy. Had I stayed with alcohol I would have been dead or in prison or somewhere today. (6)

Do you think the policy-makers in Washington might one day realise the war on drugs has been lost?

I do know, again, there’s a lot of money in prisons and there’s a lot of money in lawyers, and down on the borders there’s a lot of money in guns that come back and forth because of the drug laws. If we made everything legal we would save a whole lotta money, a whole lotta lives. If we taxed and regulated the drugs the way they do in other parts of the world, we would be far better off, I think.

Have you been disappointed with the Obama administration

When he was running for office and he had a lot of aspirations, I had a few doubts about whether he was going to be able to do it or not. I don’t think the president has as much power as we think he does, and he can say what he wants to while he’s running for office, but once he gets in there, there are four or five guys who take him into a small room, sit him round a small table and say: “Look, cowboy, here’s the way it is.” I don’t believe he can do everything he said he would.

Is songwriting a gift or craft?

It’s a gift. It all comes from somewhere. I started out really young, when I was four, five, six, writing poems, before I could play an instrument. I was writing about things when I was eight or 10 years old that I hadn’t lived long enough to experience. That’s why I also believe in reincarnation, that we were put here with ideas to pass around. Somebody sent me here to write Crazy (7) and gave me the talent to do it. I can’t take credit for any of that.

Footnotes

(1) One of the first great country musicians, as founder of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys in the 30s.

(2) One of the other great country singers, nicknamed the Cherokee Cowboy.

(3) Willie maintains a relationship with God, via a portfolio kind of spirtuality.

(4) Nelson is a proud and inveterate weed smoker. As recently as November 2010 he was arrested for possession, but the prosecutor agreed such a small amount for personal use merited only a fine. The small amount in question was 6oz.

(5) Connecticut actually decriminalised marijuana in June 2011. Maybe he meant New Hampshire, which did so in March 2012.

(6) It would be fair to say this is the subect on which he was most effusive during the course of our interview.

(7) Sung by Patsy Cline, and reputedly the most popular jukebox song in history.

? Willie Nelson’s new album, Heroes, is out now on Legacy.

Their Library: Zulu Winter

Posted by admin Comments off

Their Library is an excuse to let musicians mouth off about a subject which might otherwise be neglected – books.

The influences which sluice into your favourite album are not merely restricted to music – literature, cinema and more help inspire and provoke new artworks.

London newcomers Zulu Winter have been causing ripples of hype over the past 12 months, and finally deigned to release their debut album ‘Language’ earlier this week.

Tracking down drummer Guy Henderson, we probed the musician about the literary influences which drive him forward.

- – -

What is your favourite book and why?
‘The Secret History’ by Donna Tartt. I read this book as a student in the 2nd year of my degree course and found it particularly poignant as at the centre of the story is a young man going through student life, making new friends and growing up. There’s a sense of danger and mystery surrounding the central characters of the book that’s exciting and the plot unravels very cleverly. The thing I find most incredible is the way that Donna Tartt is able to get inside the head of a young man and write in the first person of a male character so truthfully.

What other authors do you like?
Martin Amis, Mikhail Bulgakov, Charles Bukowski, Ayn Rand to name a few I’ve recently been enjoying.

What draws you to certain books?
With books, as with films, I most often pick up books that come as recommendations from friends? As a band we’re always throwing copies of this and that at each other and it’s fun when a book does the round and we can all chat about it. Right now I’ve just been reading a lot of classics.

Do your literary influences have a direct impact on your songwriting? Personally speaking I’d be lying if I said I’d specifically fed my literary influences into songwriting. However I do believe that the music your writing at any given time will draw influence from many different things going on in your life and that might often be a book your reading. As a band a very important part of our writing process is to share influences with each other? Obviously its mostly music that we share that influences us but equally if there’s a book we’ve all read at the same time, or a theatre production we’ve all been to or an art exhibition we’ve all enjoyed then we might find a shared mood that comes across in the music we’re working on. I also know that lyrically Will often get’s strongly influenced by what he’s reading.

What are you reading at the moment?
‘The Plague’ by Albert Camus.

What is the first book you remember reading as a child?
‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl.

Did you make good use of your library card as a child / teenager?
I was very lucky to have a great Library attached to the school I was at and I did use it a lot.

How do you think literature achieves timelessness?
I believe the most important element to contribute to all timeless art is that it’s honest and comes from a truthful place. Particularly with literature I think is very important that it’s rooted in the human condition.

Do you read book reviews?
I rarely do.

Would you ever re-read the same book?
I’ve never actually completely re-read a book before but there’s been a couple of occasions when I’ve read half or 2 of a book and then lost and come back to it from the beginning.

Have you ever identified with a character in a book? Which one and why?
I frequently identify with character’s in books I read and think the best books always make you do that?

Do you read one book at a time or more than one?
I usually like to just read one book at a time although I’l quite often be reading a book of non-fiction alongside a novel.

Is there an author / poet you would like to collaborate with?
At the moment I’m very interested in collaborating with a playwright. There is a playwright/writer called Kenny Empson that I’ve known for a few years who I’m keen to pin down for a collaboration at some point (although he can be rather elusive). I haven’t seen him for a while and I’m pretty sure he’s not aware of it so if he’s reading this itcould be an odd way for him to find out.

Donna Summer, Disco Queen, Dead At 63

Posted by admin Comments off

Donna Summer, the multimillion-selling singer and songwriter whose hits captured both the giddy hedonism of the 1970s disco era and the feisty female solidarity of the early 1980s, died on Thursday at her home in Naples, Fla. She was 63.
The cause was cancer, her publicist, Brian Edwards, said.

Biography:

LaDonna Adrian Gaines (December 31, 1948 – May 17, 2012), known by the stage name Donna Summer, was an American singer-songwriter who gained prominence during the disco era of the 1970s. She had a mezzo-soprano vocal range, and was a five-time Grammy Award winner. Summer was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the U.S. Billboard chart, and she also charted four number-one singles in the United States within a 13-month period. // Continue to the full article

FACEOFF: Monica VS. Marlo Hampton In White Menswear Inspired Looks

Posted by admin Comments off

Nothing like kicking off summer with white hot looks in your closet.  And we’re loving the way both ATL ladies Marlo Hampton & Monica are ushering in the season.  Decide who rocked the all white tailored pantsuit best inside…

Last night at a private screening for the Battleship film at Atlanta’s AMC Phipps theater, "Real Housewives of Atlanta" almost-cast member Marlo Hampton looked white hot in her perfectly fitting Valentino pants.  She paired it with a White Iro tailored blazer, a silk white button down from Theory and the perfect pop of color on the feet–neon orange Jimmy Choo pumps.

But before Marlo rocked this look, Monica rocked an all white pantsuit (different designer) to her Grey Goose event she hosted at the W Hotel in Buckhead last week.   She rocked a shell blouse and a gunmetal clutch.  All paired with the perfect spring shoe–nude platform pumps.  And a pop of color with a bright pink lip.

While Marlo accessorized with Chanel & Hermes bracelets and a Versace gold clutch, Monica kept her look more sophisticated with several strands of pearls…and just her wedding ring.

So…

WHO RAN IT?!

FRAGRANCE BOND: Kanye West & Kim Kardashian Make Their Rounds Across The Pond

Posted by admin Comments off

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are across the pond in the UK hitting up events and prepping for the Watch The Throne 5-night O2 arena stint kicking off tomorrow night.  Check out their pics from the The FiFi UK Fragrance Awards inside…

Kanye West was spotted outside of his hotel in London earlier today.  Love a man in a tailored white jacket. Lookin’ good ‘Ye.

And then my fashion high was curbed.  He later returned to escort his navy maxi dress wearing girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, out for the evening.

The pair were attending The FiFi UK Fragrance Awards held at The Brewery in East London.

It’s perfect timing for Kim and Kanye in London as he prepares for his O2 concerts and she launches her new fragrance all at the same time.  And of course….the cameras never stop rolling

LACE, CROCHET & SHEER OH MY: Tia Mowry Steps Up Her Sheer Factor In NYC+Rihanna Goes Peek-A-Boo In L.A.

Posted by admin Comments off

Tia Mowry stepped out in NYC yesterday rocking a sexier look than usual.  Check out her sheer look for her book promo runs, plus Rihanna tapping into her island ways with a crochet & lace pee-a-boo look in L.A….

In a look fit for her home country of Barbados, Rihanna rocked a white peek-a-boo skirt and bandeau top –all of which barely covered her bits of cake–out to dinner at her fave restaurant Giorgio Baldi in L.A.  Maybe a pre-celebration for today’s release of her movie Battleship?

All white accentuated her new tan nicely as she hit the streets with her bestie Melissa.

Next stop last night was…of course…the club.

Elsewhere in NYC yesterday, new mom Tia Mowry showed some gals can have it all:

In a sexy black asymmetrical & sheer skirt paired with an aztec print top and boots, the now former "The Game" star Tia made her promo rounds for her new book Oh, Baby!:

A departure from her usual toned down look–but we kinda like it.  Let’s try different shoes next time though…

New music: Elro feat JME & Manga ? Scrabble

Posted by admin Comments off

Fancy a game of Scrabble? This Welshman, and former standup comedian, certainly has a way with words ?

A few weeks ago we mentioned Welsh former standup comedian turned rapper Elro in a blog about Man Like Me. Both acts have recently been signed to Mike Skinner’s newly relaunched label The Beats, with Skinner producing Elro’s early single Bad News. Describing himself as a “pretentious white boy who’s main influence is getting rejected by women”, and, on new track Scrabble, like “a black man trapped in the body of a geek at his peak” it’s obvious that he’s got a way with words and is keen to stand out, much like Skinner himself.

Scrabble, taken from the recently released Porcelain Corpse mixtape, enjoys production from the up and coming Preditah who MTV recently featured alongside a specially commissioned Grime mix. Featuring Manga and JME, Scrabble boasts fairly ridiculous wordplay from all three (JME’s “I’m a geek trapped in the body of a black man, you see” is a nice riposte), while the beat is built around big honking horns and deep bass claps. For the video the three rappers sit down for a nice game of Scrabble, their rhymes appearing alongside some choice props as the song plays out.

New York Senate In Adam Yauch Tribute

Posted by admin Comments off

New York State Senate have drafted and adopted a new resolution honouring the life and work of Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch.

Adam Yauch was one of the good guys. One third of the Beastie Boys, MCA’s impeccable flow and wicked imagination was matched to environment concerns and a lasting interest in Eastern religion.

Sadly passing away due to cancer earlier this year, the streets of New York were flooded by tributes to the rapper. An enormous Beastie Boys graffiti mural appeared, quickly going viral on the web before the New York Mets displayed a banner honouring the rapper.

Now the New York State Senate have adopted a new resolution paying their respects to the work of MCA. As SPIN and Pitchfork report, State Senator Daniel Squadron drafted the document with the house pausing to consider MCA’s impact on life and culture in the Big Apple.

The resolution in full:

- – -

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of famed rapper and activist Adam “MCA” Yauch:

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor and pay tribute to those individuals whose commitment and creative talents have contributed to the entertainment and cultural enrichment of their community and the entire State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Adam Yauch, also known as MCA, the rapper, musician, activist, film director and founder of the pioneering New York hip-hop group the Beastie Boys, died on Friday, May 4, 2012, in Manhattan at age 47;and

WHEREAS, Adam Nathaniel Yauch was born on August 5, 1964, and raised in Brooklyn Heights; he was the son of Frances Yauch, a social worker, and Noel Yauch, an architect and painter, and attended Edward R. Murrow High School in Midwood; and

WHEREAS, Adam Yauch taught himself the bass guitar while growing up and joined the Beastie Boys, originally a hardcore punk outfit, playing his first show with the group when he was just 17 years old in 1981; and

WHEREAS, The Beastie Boys became well-known in the innovative music scene in Manhattan’s East Village and Lower East Side with a sound and a style all their own; and

WHEREAS, The album “Licensed to Ill” was the first hip-hop album to top the Billboard chart; and

WHEREAS, The music and message of the Beastie Boys evolved over the years, but they can’t, they don’t, they won’t stop changing the face of hip-hop, of music, and of our culture; and

WHEREAS, The Beastie Boys exemplified New York through a period in which grassroots creativity and a community of iconoclastic artists helped redefine and rejuvenate a city on the ropes, with iconic imagery from Brooklyn to Ludlow Street; and

WHEREAS, Having consistently produced multi-million selling albums and receiving Grammy awards, in April 2012 the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but Adam Yauch was unable to attend due to deteriorating health; and

WHEREAS, In addition to his contributions to music, Adam Yauch was an activist and founder of the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness about abuses in Tibet and against Tibetans, and later in life became a successful filmmaker, founding Oscilloscope Laboratories, an independent film distribution company; and

WHEREAS, A man of colossal talent and charisma, Adam Yauch is survived by his wife, Dechen Wengdu, and their daughter, Losel; he will be missed by his family, his fans and all who knew him; his dedication to his music, his activism, and his heritage leaves an indelible legacy of inspiration for all other artists; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to mourn the death of famed rapper and activist Adam “MCA” Yauch; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the family of Adam Yauch.

A week in radio: Whatever Happened to Bobbie Gentry?

Posted by admin Comments off

This absorbing documentary explored the riddle of Billy Joe, and the mystery of the singer herself

Whatever Happened to Bobbie Gentry? (Radio 2, Monday) began with an enigma and ended with one too. Rosanne Cash, presenting, recalled hearing Ode to Billie Joe as a 12-year-old in 1967. “I was dumbfounded from the first hearing,” she recalled, remembering the “riddle at its core”. What was thrown off that bridge? Who was Billie Joe? And the riddle continued through this absorbing documentary ? written and produced by Henry Lopez Real at 6 Music ? as Cash noted that Gentry simply disappeared from public view, her “current whereabouts unknown”.

It was a fascinating listen, portraying a singer-songwriter of huge talent who is known only for a couple of singles. She was, the programme argued, scuppered by the countercultural movement that left her looking old-fashioned, a country singer and a conventionally beautiful woman. As one contributor put it: “She was hot, she wanted to look hot” at a time when for many the integrity of the music was meant to be more important than appearances.

And yet the lesser known music was sublime, all languid, smoky, and sultry. Or, as Cash suggested: “Southern homilies refracted in a prism of baroque light”, which was, in its own way: “as ambitious as anything coming out of San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury”. Most of the male contributors focused on Gentry’s looks rather than music (“The most beautiful legs”; “God, she was sexy”): a depressing insight into the culture she worked in.

Sound, though, was paramount in Poetry, Texas (Radio 4, Monday), in which Danish poet Pejk Malinovski visited this small town after finding a water tower bearing the word “Poetry” in an online search. This feature for independents Falling Tree ? who rightly won a best news feature Sony gold award this week for Child of Ardoyne ? was a goosebumpy wonder, all layers of sound-texture, mesmerising voices and a lyrical narration by Malinovski as he described the town in ordinary terms elevated into something hypnotic by the key word: “For a traveller, there’s nowhere to sleep in Poetry.”

Ashley Benson’s Two Pleasures: Her Man and Her Sweets

Posted by admin Comments off

Making the most of some relaxing time off, Ashley Benson ventured over to the Westfield Mall in Los Angeles, CA earlier this week.

The “Pretty Little Liars” starlet looked fashion forward for spring in a simple sundress paired with rocker boots while she walked through the parking lot with her boyfriend, Ryan Good.

Satisfying her sweet tooth, the 22-year-old tweeted a pic later the same night of herself loading up on tasty treats, accompanying the shot with a message reading, “Bought a ton of cookies last night”

Turning to career news, Miss Benson certainly seems to be looking forward to the anticipation for her upcoming film “Spring Breakers” – as she posted another Twitter pic of two new billboards for the flick on the Croisette in Cannes, tweeting, “Springbreakers.”

The Harmony Korine directed new comedy follows four college girls who land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation. After being bailed out by a drug and arms dealer they find themselves doing some of his dirty work.

The film also stars Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez and is set to hit theaters in 2013.

Soulsavers: The Light the Dead See ? review

Posted by admin Comments off

(V2)

Dave Gahan was a deep personal well of darkness: six minutes spent clinically dead following an overdose in 1996; a cancerous tumour in 2009. He draws on it extensively here. British duo Soulsavers have form in this area ? their last collaboration was with the similarly troubled Mark Lanegan ? and they have coaxed the Depeche Mode singer into a stream of sincere, superbly sung confessionals. As he bleakly puts it at one point: “There’s no confusion, only black. No questions to ask, like ‘Am I coming back?’” The turbulent Take’s “There’s a price that you pay for these games that you play with the Devil” is another killer line. The songs themselves are widescreen epics somewhere between Johnny Cash’s American Recordings, U2 circa One and Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti-western soundtracks, variably adding acoustic guitar, strings, organ, horns and female backing vocals. There’s tenderness, too, but Gahan’s brooding power is central to possibly his best work since Depeche’s 1990 Violator: magnificent songs about demons and failings, morality and mortality, regret, faith and devotion.

Rating: 4/5

Benga – Live At Horatio’s, Brighton

Posted by admin Comments off

Benga - Live At Horatio's, Brighton

It was with a degree of hesitation that we entered Horatio?s in Brighton at 7pm, the evening before The Great Escape officially started. On the line-up of Vevo?s first foray into the world of festivals were Benga, Chiddy Bang and Sub Focus. A rather odd trio at first glance, but enough to make us head down to the end of the pier and have a look-see.

The venue itself is pretty neat, though not typical for the dubstep heavy-hitters featured on the roster. Imagine a Harvester if it were to be popped on the end a pier and you?re pretty much there. Needless to say, the crowd was a very mixed bunch indeed. You had your typical dubstep fans ? identifiable by Reeboks and buzz cuts, trendy dubstep fans ? with their knitted jumpers and multicoloured vans. Then there were the minorities, the odd metal-head, a Brighton alt-kid here and there. So, as we were saying, the dubstep fan of 2012 takes many forms.

Chiddy Bang opened up proceedings, managing to warm up the first couple of rows but not inspiring any major reaction from the crowd. It was Benga who was the most tantalizing offering of this show. Known for being one of the original artists of the current outbreak of dubstep-mania: if there is a man who knows his cream from his dubstep-crud, Benga is he. Stepping onto the stage with Benga was Youngman, with whom Benga has been working on his new album. With sufficient swagger and lyrical quips, Youngman managed to hold his own on-stage, while keeping the crowd at bay.

The material Benga seemed most excited to play were new tracks of his own. The first to be played was ?Yellow?, a cleanly produced, yet abrasive dubstep track, as we?d expect from Benga. Two other new tunes from Benga included guest vocalists, by the names of Bebe Black and Marlene. While the girls had their charms, and Marlene had a particularly strong voice, the commercial slant of Benga?s new work made these sound all too Katy B at points. The pulsating, certified dubstep classic; Benga and Coki?s ?Night? also made an appearance, much to the pleasure of the crowd.

The final act to grace the stage that night was Sub Focus. Now, while we?re open to many things, Chiddy Bang included, Sub Focus may have been a step too far. That night both distinct sides of dubstep were flaunted, in exaggerated fashion. The underground, roots movement; of which Benga was a part. Then the overblown, teeth-shattering mammoth of what dubstep has become; Skrillex, we?re looking at you. Many of the guys down the front were loving Sub Focus, with their flat-caps, their long black mops, Hawaiian shirts etcetera. And you know what? That?s fine. These two, very different beasts can co-exist in harmony- so long as we have people like Benga reminding us where the real good sh*t is.

Music-in-the-Round ? review

Posted by admin Comments off

Crucible, Sheffield

It is interesting to speculate how 20th-century music might have turned out were it not for the invention of the sewing machine. If Paris was the capital of the European avant garde, then the salon hosted by the American heiress Winnaretta Singer ? the music-loving recipient of the Singer sewing machine fortune ? was at its epicentre. Ravel, Satie and Poulenc played for her, Isadora Duncan danced, Proust noted it all down.

Music-in-the-Round’s May festival has a French theme, and included a recreation of one of the legendary Singer salons, with the music performed by members of Ensemble 360 and the patron herself played by actor Maggie Steed. The range and significance of the pieces debuted in her drawing room was astonishing. Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie became an intoxicatingly intimate conversation between Matthew Hunt’s clarinet and Tim Horton’s piano. The lachrymose lament of Ravel’s Pavane pour une Infante Défunte is one of the most perilous things you can attempt on a horn; Naomi Atherton came very close to making it sound like a breeze. The salon was also a place where the greats were honoured. A sublime account of the B Flat Piano Trio bore out Singer’s observation that “you cannot beat Schubert”, though that didn’t stop Jean Françaix from having a go. His Octet, composed as a slightly impudent but good-humoured riposte to Schubert’s work, formed the highlight of Ensemble 360′s progamme the previous evening; the players managed to maintain a straight face almost throughout, before collapsing into a fine impression of a tipsy cafe orchestra for the concluding waltz. There was even the bonus of a family concert which proved that Poulenc’s playful incidental music for Babar the Elephant sounds very much like his music for grownups. Charmant can be the only word for it.

Poppy And The Jezebels – Live At The Queen Of Hoxton, London

Poppy And The Jezebels - Live At The Queen Of Hoxton, London

Playing their first show for over a year, and returning with a new, refined purpose, Poppy & The Jezebels were on the bill as part of a This Must Be Pop night, sandwiched between sets from EBRU and War Of Words. The four-piece all-girl band from the Midlands are on the verge of releasing their shiny new, Richard X-produced single ‘Sign In, Dream On, Drop Out!’ and it was that song’s blatant socially-conscious ?80s warmth and joyously shouty chorus that closed the set on this damp Hoxton Tuesday.

Quipping about their Birmingham roots (“You might not understand our accents at all,”) and offering sound advice not to hug friends with umbrellas tucked under their arms, lead vocalist Mollie Kingsley and diminutive keyboard player Dom Vine were the cheerful, upbeat half of the band, augmented by guitarist Amber Bradbury’s effortlessly cool demeanour and drummer Poppy Twist, who was determined to pound her drum kit into mere splinters.

Their songs in this too-short set veered from vintage New Order-style introspection, complete with obligatory jangly guitars, through to the more pronounced electronic edge on the new single. Halfway through the set they premiered a new song, ‘Turn Up The Hey’ which managed to neatly straddle dreamy indie pop with what sounded like retro house piano riffs. ‘Momma’s Boy’, also getting its first airing, lurched forth with a heavy, reggae-inflected spikiness, while tinkly synth noises that might have been echoes from Tears For Fears’ ‘Change’ – a song that was probably released well before the girls were born – were sprinkled over the top. As for the new single, devoid of a few of its synth layers, the track took on a new dimension with some angry drumming, Kingsley dancing round the small stage with evident abandon.

For some reason over the years, people seem to have made ?pop? into an ugly word, something to be ridiculed and chastised, confined to playlists of guilty pleasures and fair game for jibes. Poppy & The Jezebels instead embrace pop’s inherent catchiness and exploit it shamelessly. And, on the evidence offered up tonight, that’s no bad thing at all.

Watch Flying Lotus Play New Music

After debuting new material at Coachella last month, Flying Lotus performed even more new material at Sónar São Paulo, as Complex notes. Watch video of his set, via Sónar São Paulo’s YouTube page.

During the performance, he mentions that his full-length followup to 2010′s Cosmogramma, which is titled Until the Quiet Comes, will be out in October (as opposed to the June release date he suggested earlier this year). He also incorporated the Beastie Boys’ “Intergalactic” into his set at the 11:40 point in tribute to MCA.

We Were Promised Jetpacks And The Chapman Family

Posted by admin Comments off

The Great Escape 2012

On day two of The Great Escape Festival in Brighton, we?re here to see moody Sunderland five piece The Chapman Family. The sun has been out all day but suitably they?re playing a dingy basement at almost one in the morning, a perfect setting for their loud, yet extremely tuneful blend of distorted and feedback soaked noise.

As a warm up to The Chapman Family we pop along to see We Were Promised Jetpacks down at Coalition on the seafront. After seeing them silly amounts of times at SXSW back in March, they have been on a two month slog across the States where they have been going down a storm. Back on home soil, kind of, the venue is packed out, and disappointingly if you?re not one of the lucky few at the front, it isn?t a great venue to see much. This isn?t a band that have to much to say but when they kick off with first album track ?Short Bursts? they let the music do the talking, after this they?re soon on to their new album with ?Human Error?, but it is ?Sore Thumb? that really shows what WWPJ are all about.

Whilst they are musically as tight as you can get, merging together post rock guitars with sweeping melodies, it really is singer Adam Thompson?s impassioned roaring voice that makes you step back and say ?wow!? ?Sore Thumb? builds up through a five minute instrumental before Thompson positions himself as far back from his microphone as the small stage allows, it brings the audience to a silence and he effortlessly projects to the whole venue, even the ones standing behind the pillars not seeing anything. Ending with first album favourite ?Thunder and Lightening?, it is a bit of a shame they only do six songs in their set, but they do them well and they have been on tour for ever, so fair play.

The excitement is certainly building for The Chapman Family, after releasing ?Burn This Town? in 2011, ten songs of pure brutalness yet sheer pleasure for your ears and being known for their ferocious live shows they are the perfect band to see headlining the second day of the festival. Things have been reasonably quiet and there have been a few changes in line up over the past year so we are excited to see how this has affected their dynamic. Don?t panic though, they?re better than ever! With bassist Pop now on six string, and two new members in tow they have a new energy which clearly shows on the new songs they treat us to tonight.

New single ?No More Tears? kicks off with a beasty distorted bassline that rumbles through the venue before singer Kingsley starts singing like his life depends on it, with its refrain ?No more lies, no more fear, no more hate, no more tears?, this song is raw, full of anger, yet still manages to sound like an absolute anthem, and it?s exciting. Playing a couple more songs off their forthcoming ?Cruel Brittania? EP, The Chapman Family clearly mean business. Whilst they convey the angriness through their music, they?re nice chaps really, even dedicating live favourite ?Kids? to a fan clearly enjoying spending his birthday going mad down the front. Follwing this up with ?Anxiety? from ?Burn this Town?, this is a band that puts your faith back in to guitar music, with so many middle of the road indie bands, here is one you can believe in, playing with grit and passion and this shows as their fans aren?t ones to stand around nodding their heads, it suitably kicks off.

After mentions of a fifteen hour round trip from Stockton on Tees, it seems everyone in this venue is grateful for their efforts. The Chapman Family is not a cult, it is a fucking great band!

R.I.P. Celso Chavez of Possum Dixon

R.I.P. Celso Chavez of Possum Dixon

Celso Chavez, at right, with Possum Dixon

Celso Ricardo Chavez, guitarist for the 1990s alt rock band Possum Dixon, died May 9 due to complications from pneumonia. He was 44.

Possum Dixon were beloved among the 1990s scene in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. In March of 1995, they were first to perform at the indie rock club Spaceland, on a bill that included Beck, Lutefisk, and the Foo Fighters (their first show ever). Possum Dixon formed in 1989 and signed with Interscope in 1993. Following a self-titled LP that spawned the band’s radio and MTV hit “Watch the Girl Destroy Me”, the band released two more records: 1996′s Star Maps and 1998′s New Sheets

“His infectious smile could light up any room he walked into,” said Rob Zabrecky, Possum Dixon’s frontman. “He was a mysterious and beautiful person. Celso was the heart and soul of our band.”

Chavez’s family asks that donations be made to the MusiCares/MAP Fund.

Posted by admin Comments off

The Game showed off his fatherly side with a trip to Disneyland with his kids recently. See the pics inside as well as J. Lo with her twins at work and new family photos from Rihanna.

Even gangsta rappers like to have fun with their kids as shown by The Game taking his family to Disneyland.

The kiddies looked happy on their way to the Magic Kingdom.

The Game checked King Justice, Harlem and Cali Dream out of school for the day to make the trip.

He tweeted,

“Today was the best day of the last 4,” wrote Game. “I just woke up today & got the idea to go & check all 3 of my children out of school early & surprise them with a random trip to Disneyland…. They had a blast & so did Daddy. Days like this make up for all the bad days I’ve ever had. The love my kids & I share balance my life so perfectly…. It’s almost too good to be true sometimes. Sidenote: I figured you guys would appreciate Mickey Mouse & Goofy sharing some of the instagram love today… Especially due to the fact they’ve both played a huge part in all of our childhood experiences… #HateItOr…. Just LOVE it for christ’s sake !!!”

And on the "American Idol" set……

Jennifer Lopez showed off her cute kids Max and Emme.

And in other family fun…..

Rihanna posted new photos of her family on Instagram calling them the "Fenty Force."  This flick was from last night’s Battleship premiere.

She also tweeted a pic of her cutie pie lil’ brother under the title "My Boo."

This week’s new tracks

Posted by admin Comments off

Scissor Sisters
Only The Horses (Polydor)

After the 81% amazing Azealia Banks-assisted Shady Love failed to set the world alight, Scissor Sisters have continued taking risks by roping in melody-phobic radio kryptonite Calvin Harris. Thankfully, they’ve caught Calvin on one of his more chart-friendly days, with Only The Horses the kind of sophisticated banger David Guetta et al only seem to make by accident. Pianos plink and plonk prettily, the synths seem to constantly expand and the central lyric about wanting to escape it all is deliriously lovely. Oh, and if you’re wondering when it all “goes off”, it’s around 2:50. You’re welcome.

Demi Lovato
Give Your Heart A Break (Hollywood)

As with the majority of former Disney alumni, Demi Lovato has had her fair share of personal struggles in recent years (eating disorders, alcoholism, drug abuse, dating a Jonas brother). However, she channelled her pain into the spectacular Skyscraper, an almighty ballad as gargantuan as the title suggests. In fact, its shadow is so huge that this follow up ? a musically upbeat sing-along about taking a risk and falling in love ? still sounds emotionally ravaged. Frankly, it makes me want to find her and give her a big, slightly inappropriate hug.

The Saturdays
30 Days (Polydor/Fascination)

Thirteen singles and three albums into their career as the New Look Girls Aloud and the Saturdays have yet to have a UK No 1 single. Unfortunately, it feels like their best chance of changing that was with the Xenomainia-produced masterpiece All Fired Up, but 30 Days has its moments, specifically some physics A-Level lyrics (“Subtract the distance, fly in the speed of light”) and the lovely “oh, oh, ah” chorus bits.

Mark Ronson & Katy B
Anywhere In The World (Sony Music)

Anywhere In The World isn’t the official Team GB song for the forthcoming International Sports Day gala, Katy and Mark choosing Coca-Cola as a more suitable outlet for their ditty about countries uniting over a women’s beach volleyball match. Musically, it’s built around looped samples of athletes kicking or jumping on things, which is impressive at first but soon pales when you realise there’s no real tune to hold the sonic splicing together.

Ben Howard
Only Love (Island)

In the video for Only Love, Ben Howard ? a man who sounds as if he’s singing through gritted teeth ? is shown singing a song in a posh-looking flat overlooking a street. There are fleeces, beards and some serious musician face on show. Slowly, a crowd of people walk towards the flat and burn it down as a protest. Only they don’t of course, they’re actually there as a part of a “flashmob” (yuck) and all they do is applaud this flaccid dribble of a song.
